Taco Time II: The Molly Mooning
Taco Time ups its game and serves up Molly Moon’s ice cream. I have thoughts.
Taco Time’s Molly Moon Ice Cream
Here’s an interesting tidbit in the ongoing Taco Time saga: The Seattle-based fast-food chain has joined forces with perennial local favorite, Molly Moon’s Homemade Ice Cream. How the partnership came to be is under wraps, but Taco Time isn’t shy about proclaiming it “a match made in the PNW. [..] At select locations while supplies last.”
The exclusivity. Taco Time plays it coy in a Facebook post, throwing down the “VERY limited time” card, and only serves the dessert at eight locations. It also indicates the colab might continue through summer – which kind of nulls the “limited time” claim – but for now, you can find the flavors in unexpected corners of King County. More on that below.
I get why Taco Time makes a big deal of this. Molly Moon’s is featured in national publications, and their charity work received a 2016 White House Champion of Change Award. It’s a prolific creamery and a bit of a Seattle icon. Taco Time has its cult following, but it doesn’t receive Food & Wine write-ups, nor does it donate ten percent of its profits. This colab is more substantial for Taco Time than it is for Molly Moon’s.
As for the ice cream, they’ve named the “Melted Chocolate” and “Churro” containers “Minimoons.” The churro is fittingly a Taco-Time-exclusive flavor, and is worth the trip if you’re a Molly Moon’s completionist. Much like the creamery’s other products, it tastes natural, and it couldn’t have been easy distilling the cinnamon-forward churro into small-batch ice cream. You don’t get any superfluous notes, just pure churro instead of something like the more common cinnamon ice cream. $3.49 a pop isn’t bad, either.
Here’s the caveat: Taco Time’s freezers are evidently too cold for the ice cream, and the accompanying spoons barely make a dent. In that sense, this is not something you can eat on the spot – instead, you will want to bring it with you so it has time to defrost. It’s not all bad, as there were no signs of frostbite. You won’t need to wait much longer than fifteen to twenty minutes to dig into the Molly Moon’s you know and (presumably) love.
A quick aside on the actual restaurant: Since when did Taco Time become so fancy? The Renton Fairwood location doesn’t just have a fireplace – it has an inside/outside fireplace. Al-fresco crisp burritos during the winter months? Classy move, Taco Time. The wood-forward interiors elevate the vibe, too.
I suppose one could argue you could just go to a Molly Moon’s shop for ice cream, but I, for one, feel that Taco Time’s foray into classy dining should be celebrated. Small-batch ice cream and swanky new interiors could be a well-timed evolutionary step for Taco Time.
The aforementioned Facebook post doesn’t give you maps to locations serving Molly Moon’s, so, for your convenience, here’s where you can go for exclusive churro ice cream:

It’s time to update the ol’ Better Taster Boutique, and who better to choose the next t-shirt design than you? The theme this time around will be Norwegian road signs: Santa or Hell.

On the left, you have the “Santa Crossing” sign located in my childhood town of Drøbak. The place fashions itself as a “Christmas Village,” and it managed to finagle a public road sign as promotional material.
Then there’s the “Hell” sign that goes viral ever so often. Hell, which actually means “overhang,” is a town located near Trondheim, where you can also find a railway sign that reads “Gods Expedition” – “freight handling.”
So, the question is: Which one would you like to see on a t-shirt?
